they stand in silent witness
soaking up our sins,
towering over our joys;
we treat them as nothing,
taking their presence for granted
as we speed on
with our overwrought lives,
we fail to appreciate
their beauty and service;
unthinking
we use them
as food and fuel,
for shelter,
or at our worst,
for nothing;
they stand watch over our lives
a constant presence
through the storms of time,
aging with us,
living beyond us
they offer more
than we understand:
their presence heals us,
can we begin
to see them
for all they are,
can we protect them,
can we love them

Walking
it seems so simple to walk,
to place one foot before the other
in the world,
to do so without thought
is to miss the gift
of all that is on offer:
do you see the world,
the flowers in their vibrant blooms,
the faces of those on their porches
turned up to the sun,
do you hear the laughter
of the children at play,
do you stretch out your senses
to feel the calm of the nature,
do you allow yourself to become one
with all that surrounds,
do you let yourself
know peace
Costs
each moment
is another cut
from a knife
held by those who
are supposed to lead;
they stab at us
without respite,
nothing is good enough -
no effort,
no result -
we are always made
to feel wanting;
there is no enough,
there is only more,
demanded from the backs
of those who are broken,
it is the only cost
they aren't concerned about
