Being the Weather

we are the weather,
each destructive gust
of every violent storm;

we shun suicide
but are killing ourselves
to live;

our choices -
our luxurious desires -
destroy us

we mourn the loss of accountability,
but fail
to look in the mirror:

the world starts with us,
we are the power
we so desperately crave;

can we find the wisdom
to wield it for the health
of the world

Ignorance

when we look up,
finally having torn ourselves
away from the screen,
which has distracted us
from the carnage
of our existence,
will we recognize
the hand we played
in the world's destruction:

in our longing for belonging,
in our striving to meet the expectations
seen on screen -
by having and consuming -
we have devoured the world
and our selves with it -

or will we see nothing;
the transgressions of today
forgotten in the immediacy tomorrow,
so we may rest
with the false innocence
of ignorance
