Sins Revealed

the rain came sideways
in steady gray sheets,
riding the furious gusts
that tore at the windows
and tossed about
all that wasn't weighted down;

the light show upon the black canvas
flashed a dangerous disco,
preceding the vicious cracks of thunder
that fragmented the night,
further darkening the sky;

too many saw it as a cool storm,
a hard rain,
another day,
to the those willing to open eyes,
it was another sign
of our deepening sin

Ignorance

when we look up,
finally having torn ourselves
away from the screen,
which has distracted us
from the carnage
of our existence,
will we recognize
the hand we played
in the world's destruction:

in our longing for belonging,
in our striving to meet the expectations
seen on screen -
by having and consuming -
we have devoured the world
and our selves with it -

or will we see nothing;
the transgressions of today
forgotten in the immediacy tomorrow,
so we may rest
with the false innocence
of ignorance
