the sky is clear,
an endless blue,
the sun burns unencumbered
by Winter's cold
birdsong has returned
to rest upon
lifeless limbs
awaiting Spring's buds
a season has died,
a new one begins,
life is returning
what did we learn,
what will we carry forward
to ensure we are not
just counting the passing
of time

A Hint of Spring
what a relief
is the winter sun,
cutting through
the bitter cold air,
to provide a faint glimmer
of a distant warmth -
a hug of hope,
a reminder
of a Springtime to come -
it nourishes the soul;
too often we fear
the bite of winter winds,
keeping ourselves locked inside
we miss out on
the most joyous part of winter:
these simple reminders of Spring,
so precious,
they keep us going
Winter Nights
the silence of a winter night
stretches beyond
the farthest reaches of the ear;
all is calm stillness;
the harsh bite of the cold,
the wicked bursts of wind
have faded to nothingness
as they wait for the rise of the sun
to take up their assault anew;
in these moments it is safe
to step out and take the air,
absorbing the calm -
resetting the self
from the chaos of existence -
don't fear the darkness
embrace all it has to offer
