The Trees

they stand in silent witness
soaking up our sins,
towering over our joys;

we treat them as nothing,
taking their presence for granted
as we speed on
with our overwrought lives,
we fail to appreciate
their beauty and service;

unthinking
we use them
as food and fuel,
for shelter,
or at our worst,
for nothing;

they stand watch over our lives
a constant presence
through the storms of time,
aging with us,
living beyond us
they offer more
than we understand:

their presence heals us,

can we begin
to see them
for all they are,
can we protect them,
can we love them
