Winter

winter knocks at the door,
screened by the false warmth
of a welcoming sun
on placid fields of white
it invites us outside;

where we are subjected
to the frigid grasp
of the wind's icy fingers
upon our exposed skin,
its cold gusts
burning our throats -

a frantic reminder
of the beautiful tenacity
of the dead season
